Liverpool suffered a blow to their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stage after Real Madrid were emphatic 3-0 winners at Anfield.

Former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock with a brilliant opener after combining with Colombia international James Rodriguez.

Karim Benzema doubled the visitors’s lead with a superb looping header before the Madrid striker bagged his second of the night before half-time.

Brendan Rodgers substituted Mario Balotelli at the break, and the Reds salvaged some pride by denying the reigning champions a fourth.

Ronaldo said: “It was special. My first goal here at Anfield. I feel very proud of that. We won and got three points, it was amazing.”

Asked if Madrid could retain their crown, Ronaldo added: “Why not. We’re thinking step by step. We’re going to try like last year and we know it will be very tough. It will be possible if we play like that.”
