Theo Walcott played his first competitive game in nine months on Friday night as he featured for Arsenal’s Under-21 side against Blackburn Rovers.

The 25-year-old England international has not featured for the Gunners since picking up a knee ligament injury against Tottenham in the FA Cup back in January.

Walcott underwent surgery and missed the World Cup, but is now nearing a return to first-team action for the north London club.

Serge Gnabry was also in action on Friday night following the 19-year-old’s own spell on the sidelines with a knee problem

Speaking on Thursday, manager Arsene Wenger insisted that he would not rush Walcott back to action too soon.

Wenger said: “He has been out for nine months and needs to find some rhythm in the game and some confidence to go into the contact.”
