The France international was touted as a potential United target over the summer as new manager Louis van Gaal looked to address the Red Devils’s leaky defence.
Varane, 21, has cemented a starting spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid line-up since his move to the Bernabeu from Lens at the start of the 2011/12 campaign.
And the Madrid centre-half revealed that the Red Devils were interested in his services before the 20-time English champions signed Jones in a £16m deal from Blackburn Rovers in 2011.
“Manchester United? They had just signed Phil Jones in my position,” Varane told L’Equipe.
On Sunday, Jose Mourinho has revealed that he is a keen admirer of Varane but does not expect Madrid to sell the defender.
“I Like Varane, but everybody knows that he will stay at Real Madrid,” Mourinho told Telefoot.
“France has a lot of good players like Varane, Paul Pogba, Karim Benzema and Hugo Lloris. They can win Euro 2016.
“I have a lot of respect for Didier Deschamps. In the World Cup, we saw a great French team.”
