Roy Keane lifts lid on funny Man United team talk before Tottenham clash
Manchester United legend Roy Keane recalls funny Sir Alex Ferguson team talk before Tottenham clash
Roy Keane has recalled one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s funniest team talks during the former Manchester United captain’s 12-and-a-half year career at Old Trafford.
The retired Republic of Ireland international reignited his long-running feud with United legend Ferguson after releasing his autobiography, The Second Half, earlier this month.
He [Ferguson] came in and said: ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’, and that was it. Brilliant.
However, momentarily casting aside his feelings of acrimony towards his old boss, the current Aston Villa assistant manager praised Ferguson’s ability to judge the atmosphere in the United dressing room before delivering a perfectly-balanced team talk.
Speaking about his own experience as manager at Sunderland and Ipswich Town at a question-and-answer session in London to promote his new book on Monday, Keane said: “I thought I knew what the group might need, that we didn’t need a big team talk.
“It was Tottenham at home. I thought, please don’t go on about Tottenham, we all know what Tottenham is about, they are nice and tidy but we’ll f**king do them.
“He came in and said: ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’, and that was it. Brilliant.”
Keane continued: “It could have been a European semi-final, it could have been Leeds away, it could have been a home League Cup tie – Alex Ferguson always had a feel of the group.”
