Shrewsbury 1 Chelsea 2: Player ratings as Didier Drogba stars

Player ratings as Didier Drogba helps guide Chelsea into the next round

By Dipak Patel

Petr Cech Had hardly anything to do, and when Shrewsbury did hit a few shots towards his goal, they were often hit harmlessly wide. 6/10

Andreas Christensen A difficult game for the young Danish player. A little inexperienced defensively and played a little too high up the pitch at times, being caught out of position. 5

Kurt Zouma A hugely-talented defender but the partnership with Cahill showed some inexperience. They failed to deal with a few route one balls into the box. 6

Gary Cahill Normally so dominant but a lack of playing time with defensive partner Zouma showed. Panic seemed to ensue anytime the ball was thrown into the box. 5

Filipe Luis Hasn’t performed to the same levels he achieved with Atletico Madrid last season and even struggled today against League Two opponents. 5

John Obi Mikel Still not really sure what he offers to the team. Recycles the ball well enough, but they are normally five-yard passes and lack ambition. His rash clearance led to Town scoring the equaliser. 5

Nathan Ake Booked early on for a rash lunge but recovered well. Showed maturity in the centre of the park, making many successful passes and breaking up play. 6

Mohamed Salah Started well and showed a lot of pace but was very wasteful in front of goal. Hit a few shots with his left foot hopelessly wide, but managed to get an important assist for Drogba’s goal. 7

Oscar Good performance as he created quite a few chances. Kept the ball well but should have stamped more of his authority on the game considering his talent. 6

Andre Schurrle Hit a ferocious shot that the keeper did well to tip over the bar. But it was a largely subdued performance from the Germany international. 6

Didier Drogba (Man of the match) Second good performance of the week for the powerful striker. Was a nuisance throughout and took his first goal really well striking it on the volley. Also played an important part in the second goal as his pressure led to the Shrewsbury Town defender panicking. 8

Willian Good cameo as his cross led to the own goal that eventually won Chelsea the game. Also showed good energy to help out defensively. 6

Jayson Leutwiler Made good saves from Drogba and Schurrle and coped reasonably well with everything that was thrown at him. 6

Connor Goldson Performed admirably against vastly superior opponents. Kept defensive shape well throughout most of the match. 7

Jermaine Grandison Was probably Town’s best defender on the night making numerous interceptions and tackles. Ultimately his own goal lost his team the game but was very unfortunate as he had to attack the ball with Drogba lurking. 6

Nathaniel Knight-Percival Made a great interception from a dangerous cross from Oscar that could have led to a goal. Enhanced his reputation. 7

Jack Grimmer Covered so much ground and didn’t shy away from the ball against superior opposition. 7

Bobby Grant Nearly scored as he drove through the defence but was wild with his effort as it blazed over the bar. Just lacked a bit of quality in important moments. 6

Ryan Woods The midfield for Town performed very well and Woods played a large part in that. Unlucky to be on the losing side as he gave everything. 7

Liam Lawrence Showed his class having played in the Premier League before with Stoke. Sprayed the ball around well and controlled the midfield. Also made quite a few important tackles. 7

Mickey Demetriou Stayed compact and helped the defence whenever he could. Limited in an attacking sense but it was more down to Chelsea’s quality rather than anything else. 6

James Collins Was a difficult night as he chased a lot of lost causes. Tried to win as many balls as he could but Town were often set up to defend so there was a distinct lack of support. Substituted for Mangan. 5

Jean-Louis Showed a lot of energy in a frustrating night. Hit a deflected shot just wide and would have been a good reward for his industry. 6

Andrew Mangan Scored a very important goal to keep Town in the game as he took advantage of slack defending to poke home from close range. 7

Jordan Clark Didn’t have a huge impact on the game but added some much needed energy to a tiring midfield. 6
