Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he tried to sign Luke Shaw for Manchester United when he was just 16, but was told by Southampton that he was not for sale.

The Red Devils eventually brought the defender to Old Trafford in the summer in a £30m deal as Louis van Gaal bolstered his Red Devils squad.

And the former United boss has revealed that he is a keen admirer of the England left-back.

“The signing of Shaw was the one we were trying to get at 16 years of age,” Ferguson told MUTV.

“They wouldn’t sell him to us but said we would be the first to know if they ever did, and Ed Woodward has followed that through.

“We got him for I think it was £30m. [He’s a] talented boy, good footballer, likes to get forward all the time.
