Sir Alex Ferguson admits that he found it difficult to see Liverpool outperform Manchester United last season and qualify for the Champions League.

The Red Devils slumped to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League after David Moyes’ doomed spell in charge ended with his sacking in April.

Liverpool were contenders for the title for much of the season but ended up just behind champions Manchester City as the Reds sealed a return to the top four.

It was a rough season for a United fan and it was tough for me

And former United manager Ferguson concedes that 2013-14 was a “rough season” for Red Devils supporters.

“It’s hard to watch that kind of outcome when Liverpool are the ones dishing out the pain,” Ferguson wrote in an updated version of his autobiography.

“It was a rough season for a United fan and it was tough for me because I knew there were plenty of good players in our squad.

“They weren’t showing their form – and that seemed to place a huge weight on David’s shoulders.”
