Jan Vertonghan has an unwarranted “big reputation”, according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Spurs centre-half is widely regarded as one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League following his £10m move to White Hart Lane from Ajax in the summer.

Vertonghen has a big reputation, unwarranted at times if I’m being honest. Spurs just keep conceding goals

Vertonghen has been linked with a potential move away from the north London side in recent weeks amid reports that talks over a new Spurs deal have stalled.

But former Liverpool centre-half Carragher reckons Vertonghen is overrated, adding that he wouldn’t trust the Belgium international.

“United and Arsenal need a centre-half and you’re thinking where are these centre-halves?” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“We look at the centre-halves who have come into this country in the last couple of years for £10m.

“Mangala is struggling, so is Lovren at Liverpool. Sakho the same.

“Vertonghen has a big reputation, unwarranted at times if I’m being honest. Spurs just keep conceding goals.”

“On their performances this season, I would trust any of them.”

Vertonghen has scored four goals in 59 Premier League appearances for Spurs.
