Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen: We’re getting close to what we want
The Tottenham centre-half is confident Spurs will improve in the coming weeks
Jan Vertonghen believes Tottenham Hotspur are still on course to achieve their targets for the season after reaching the League Cup quarter-finals.
The north London side set up a last-eight meeting with Newcastle United after 2-0 victory over Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night.
Hopefully we can get back on track now
And Belgian Vertonghen is confident Spurs can get back on track after an inconsistent start the season under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.
“It is difficult to say,” Vertonghen said.
“I don’t talk about being unlucky but I think we had a good first half (against Newcastle) and we were the better team, we lost a bit of the belief after the early equaliser and maybe a bit of luck, we are working very hard and we believe in each other – we are getting close to what we want.
“We are doing well in the cup but we need a run of a couple of games where we are doing well.
“People thought we started that against Arsenal and Southampton and maybe we were unlucky that the international break came in-between – but hopefully we can get back on track now.”
Tottenham have lost four of their nine Premier League games this season, leaving Pochettino’s side in 11th place.
