Radamel Falcao has been ruled out of Manchester United’s trip to Manchester City on Sunday due to injury but Wayne Rooney is fit and ready to return, Louis van Gaal has revealed.

There were fears over Rooney’s fitness this week due to reports that the England striker had suffered a problem while serving his three-game suspension for his red card against West Ham.

He shall play, he is my captain. That is all I can say to you

However, Van Gaal dismissed the claims surrounding his captain’s fitness and confirmed that Antonio Valencia is also available again.

“Rooney was not injured,” said Van Gaal on Friday.

“The media were writing that but he was never injured. Maybe his shoes were too tight, that is possible, but he was never injured. He shall play, he is my captain. That is all I can say to you.

“Falcao is still injured. I think Valencia is fit again to play.”

The Dutchman continued: “I have heard that he [Rooney] has scored a lot of goals against City, the most of any player.

“I said it to him to stimulate him but he doesn’t need that. I am very happy that he can play again and he shall play.”
