Video: Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas comes off second best after referee clash
Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas collides with referee Phil Dowd
Cesc Fabregas produced one of his more forgettable performances of the season at Old Trafford on Sunday, and even referee Phil Dowd managed to get one up on the Chelsea midfielder.
The Spain international was credited with an assist for Didier Drogba’s 53rd-minute opener, before his former Arsenal team-mate Robin van Persie levelled in stoppage time.
While Fabregas secured his eighth assist of the Premier League campaign, Marouane Fellaini was the recipient of praise after keeping close tabs on the 27-year-midfielder.
But referee Dowd also managed to put Fabregas in his place after the £27m summer signing came off second best after colliding with the stout match official.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wasn’t best pleased with Dowd’s performance either, criticisng a number of decisions that went against his side.
“I prefer to be in front rather than behind, obviously, because we have a little space for our mistakes, or the referee’s mistakes,” Mourinho said.
“I have no comments on the referee. I prefer just to say my feeling is we had a good first half and a fantastic second half.
“You know I cannot speak [about the referee]. Some can and some don’t and one of the ones who cannot speak is me, because you know what happens to me when I do.
“So I prefer not to speak about the second yellow card because, if I do, I have to start in the first half and go through many, many things that happened in the game.”
