Video: Tottenham star Vertonghen tries to emulate Lamela’s rabona goal
Jan Vertonghen takes to the Spurs training pitch inspired by Erik Lamela
Erik Lamela’s superb rabona goal was probably being replicated by budding footballers across the country on Friday morning, and Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen was no different at Spurs training.
The Argentina international was the talk of social media after the former Roma midfielder scored a brilliant rabona goal from the edge of the area during a 5-1 win against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League.
It prompted the likes of England legend Gary Lineker and former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen to take to Twitter hailing the special effort on Thursday night.
And Spurs defender Vertonghen did his best to emulate Lamela’s superb rabona goal as part of Tottenham’s ‘Ball in a Bag’ challenge, with the north London side posting the clip to their Facebook page.
Following the landslide Europa League win, the former Ajax captain hailed Lamela’s strike as the best he has ever seen live.
“I was stunned, for two minutes I was just thinking about that goal,” Vertonghen said.
“It is 100% the best goal I’ve seen live. I’ve seen a lot of YouTube clips but I’ve never seen a goal like it. I think the Puskas award is already his.”
