Angel di Maria is hoping to be fit for Manchester United’s trip to Arsenal at the weekend, despite suffering a foot injury on international duty.

The £59.7m winger suffered the problem after colliding with Nani in Argentina’s 1-0 friendly loss to Portugal at Old Trafford on Tuesday night and needed an X-ray after the game.

Di Maria said: “It was just a blow. I hope it doesn’t swell any more so I can play at the weekend.”

Argentina boss Gerardo Martino also moved to play down the severity of the problem.

“We don’t think it is anything serious,” said Martino. “It was quite a tough blow that he took.

“It was a tough knock. It cut the skin a little bit. But we have had a look at it and we are evaluating the situation.

“We are having a look at some X-rays, some images that have been taken but in spite of that we don’t think it is too serious.”

United have already seen three of their players pick up injuries during the international break, with David de Gea hurting his finger, Michael Carrick suffering a groin strain and Daley Blind sustaining a knee problem.
