Arsenal 1 Man United 2: Our plan worked, declares Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney says Manchester United's game-plan paid off against Arsenal
Wayne Rooney claimed that Manchester United’s game-plan to hit Arsenal on the break paid off after Saturday’s 2-1 win at The Emirates.
After a goalless first half, Kieran Gibbs deflected Antonio Valencia’s shot into his own goal 10 minutes after half-time and Rooney added a second with a chipped finish in the 85th minute.
Gunners striker Olivier Giroud marked his comeback from a broken leg with a stunning left-footed strike in stoppage time but United held on to secure the three points.
“We rode our luck at times, our goalkeeper was fantastic,” said Rooney.
“We felt they were vulnerable on the break and we hit them with two good goals, which was our game plan.
“Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett have coped really well. This will give us a lot of belief and confidence, it’s come at a good time for us.
“It’s been an indifferent start for us but we hope we can go on a good run now. We want to build a bit of momentum going into the new year and see where we are then.”
The win lifted United up to fourth in the table, while Arsenal dropped down to eighth place.
