Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal came close to signing Lionel Messi from Barcelona in 2003.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner was in the Spanish club’s youth system aged 15 when the Frenchman attempted to lure him to the north London club.

Wenger held talks with Messi’s family and but the club struggled to obtain a work permit for the Argentine.

“It’s true, it’s just that he didn’t want to move, said Wenger on Friday.

“In the end, he was comfortable at Barcelona.”

Wenger did, however, manage to lure midfielder Cesc Fabregas to the north London club from Barcelona in the same year.

Wenger’s Arsenal side host Manchester United at Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Would Lionel Messi ever have signed for Arsenal?
