Arsenal need world-class goalkeeper to challenge, says Liverpool legend
Mark Lawrenson says Arsene Wenger needs to improve his defence
Mark Lawrenson says Arsenal would be title contenders if Arsene Wenger signed a world-class goalkeeper and improved his defence.
The Gunners are fifth in the Premier League table after a 2-1 defeat by Swansea City before the international break, leaving the north London side 12 points adrift of runaway leaders Chelsea.
And former Liverpool defender Lawrenson reckons Arsene Wenger is guilty of building his current side from the front, as opposed to the solid defensive foundations which helped Arsenal win their last title in 2004.
“They are incomparable. They had absolutely everything. They could fight you as well,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“If you look at the Arsenal team, defensively nowhere near. World-class goalkeeper? No.
“That team was built from the back, forward. The current side is built from the forward, back.
“If you get yourself a world-class goalkeeper and a strong defence, with the players they’ve got going forward, they’d have a great chance of winning the title.”
