Arsenal transfers: Ray Parlour wants ‘strong defensive’ signings
Ray Parlour says Arsenal need a defensive midfielder
Ray Parlour has urged Arsene Wenger to make “strong defensive” signings in the January transfer market.
The Gunners have been contending with an injury crisis in recent months after defenders Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy were sidelined with injury.
And former Arsenal midfielder Parlour wants the Gunners boss to make a swoop for West Ham United star Winston Reid or Aston Villa’s experienced Ron Vlaar.
“Cabaye, Schneiderlein, Winston Reid and Ron Vlaar would be on my list. We need strong defensive players,” Parlour wrote on Sportslobster.
Wenger confirmed that Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta is set for a spell on the sidelines just days after Jack Wilshere suffered an ankle injury against Manchester United.
And Parlour, who won three Premier League titles with the Gunners, feels the north London club desperately need a player in the mould of Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.
“Oxlade Chamberlain, Wilshere, Sanchez, Walcott are probably our best midfielders although Ramsey played well tonight.
“A holding midfielder like Matic is vital though when you see what he’s done at Chelsea. We’re missing that.”
