Arsene Wenger reflects on Arsenal’s defensive issues
The Arsenal manager accepts that his side have been far from consistent at the back this season
Arsene Wenger admits that Arsenal are “paying the price” for Mathieu Debuchy’s injury due to their lack of defensive cover.
The France international has been out of action since September after suffering ligament damage during the 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester City at Emirates Stadium.
Debuchy has been joined on the sidelines by Laurent Koscielny, with Nacho Monreal and Calum Chambers both being drafted in as cover at the back.
And the Gunners boss, who sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona in the summer, concedes that his side have been struggling for consistency in defence this term.
“We are missing our defensive solidity at the moment, due to injuries,” Wenger told BeIn Sport.
“We are paying the price for Debuchy’s injury because Calum Chambers is a central defender.
“I think we have a very good balance between Koscielny and [Per] Mertesacker, so we are losing experience at the back at the moment.”
