Brendan Rodgers’s biggest failure is not appointing experienced staff, according to Rene Meulensteen.

The Northern Irishman works alongside his long-term number two Colin Pascoe, whilst former Liverpool defender Mike Marsh is the first-team coach at Anfield.

Rodgers has come under scrutiny in recent months after Liverpool’s disappointing start to the season, leaving the Reds in seventh place in the Premier League.

But Meulensteen, who was Sir Alex Ferguson’s second-in-command at Old Trafford for five years, reckons Rodgers is lacking experienced heads in his coaching staff.

“Brendan Rodgers’s biggest failure is that he’s not invested in his staff,” Meulensteen told BBC Sport.

“He has obviously got people around him who he obviously thinks are the right ones.

“But I think he could have done with someone who has been there, seen it and done it.”

Liverpool face Newcastle United at St James’ Park in Saturday’s early kick-off.
