Brendan Rodgers has reiterated that Steven Gerrard is part of his plans for Liverpool.

Earlier this week, the Reds captain revealed that he hasn’t spoken to the 18-time English champions about a new contract with his current deal set to expire next May.

He’s been a brilliant captain for me. I want to keep him here

The 34-year-old, who has captained Liverpool to a Champions League crown, the FA Cup and League Cup, stated that he would be open to a move away from Anfield if a new offer fails to materialise.

But Liverpool manager Rodgers is confident that the club will put together a new package befitting their long-serving skipper.

“I explained to Steven’s representative that I want him to be part of what we’re doing here,” Rodgers said.

“He’s been a brilliant captain for me. I want to keep him here.”

Rodgers added: “I relayed that information to the owners.

“I’m sure they’ll go away with that and with Steven’s representatives, hopefully organise a deal. He’s a unique player and a unique person.”
