Jamie Carragher says qualification to the Champions League knockout stage would provide Liverpool with a massive boost ahead of the festive period.

The Reds face a tricky clash against Ludogorets on Wednesday night as Liverpool look to end a three-game losing run in Europe’s premier club competition.

It will give the players, the staff and supporters something to look forward to in the new year so I think it is very important for them

The five-time European champions need to beat Ludogorets and Basel to boost their chances of securing a place in the last-16 of the Champions League.

And Liverpool legend Carragher warned Brendan Rodgers’s side that they will need to improve to get past their plucky Bulgarian opponents.

“We need to raise our game, but it’s going to be a tough game whether you’re in good form or out of form as Liverpool unfortunately are at the moment,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

The ex-Reds defender added: “Liverpool’s future in the Champions League doesn’t come down to this game, they’ve obviously got the home game against Basel that they need to come through to qualify.

“I think if Liverpool qualify it will give everyone a massive lift at the club. It will give the players, the staff and supporters something to look forward to in the new year so I think it is very important for them.

“There has been a lot made of getting into the Champions League last season – you don’t want to go out at an early stage so they are huge, these next two games. They can’t qualify just through the Ludogorets game but they can put themselves almost there with a good result.”
