Ray Parlour says Danny Welbeck will be desperate to prove a point to Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal at The Emirates on Saturday.

The 23-year-old striker joined Arsenal in a £16m deal from United on transfer deadline day after he was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

People were asking, ‘Is he the right player?’ He’s been superb though

Welbeck has scored five goals in 12 games in all competitions for the north London side, including a hat-trick against Galatasaray in the Champions League.

And former Arsenal midfielder Parlour reckons Van Gaal was naïve to stoke Welbeck’s flames ahead of the big clash at Emirates Stadium in Saturday’s late kick-off.

“You should never say anything before the game,” Parlour told talkSPORT. “Danny Welbeck will be chomping at the bit to score a couple of goals. He’s in great form at the moment.

“A lot of eyes were raised when Danny moved to Arsenal. People were asking, ‘Is he the right player?’ He’s been superb though.”

Welbeck scored 20 goals in 92 appearances for United during a six-year first-team playing career at Old Trafford.

Has Danny Welbeck been a success at Arsenal?
