Dark cloud hanging over Liverpool, says former Reds striker
John Toschack reckons Liverpool are still suffering from the shock of throwing away the title last season
John Toshack believes there is still a dark cloud hanging over Anfield after their Premier League title collapse last season.
The Reds were beaten 1-0 by Champions League holders Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, leaving Liverpool in third place in Group B.
Liverpool really are going through a bit of a dodgy spell
And former Liverpool striker Toschack reckons Brendan Rodgers’s side are struggling after finishing two points behind league champions Manchester City last season.
“I still think there’s a dark cloud hanging over Anfield from what happened,” Toshack told BBC Sport.
“They went so close after being so long without winning that championship.
“I still think there’s a bit of a hangover there. It’s a bitter pill to swallow for them.”
Toshack described Rodgers’s decision to field an under-strength side against Real Madrid was damage limitation.
“Liverpool really are going through a bit of a dodgy spell.
“It looked very much to me as a bit of a damage limitation job. I don’t say they were happy losing 1-0 but I think that if Liverpool had nicked a goal then Madrid would have gone straight down and got another one.
“I think both sides were reasonably happy yesterday.”
