David De Gea names Man United legends among favourite goalkeepers
Manchester United shot stopper hails Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel
David De Gea has named Manchester United legends Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel as two of his favourite goalkeepers.
The Spain international has been compared to the Red Devils duo in recent months following an impressive start to the season despite the club’s struggles.
And De Gea, who moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, admitted Schmeichel was an inspirational figure for the young shot stopper.
“He was one of the best in the world and an unbelievable goalkeeper,” De Gea told United’s website.
“He was admired by everyone who watched him. I watched him a lot growing up and now on MUTV! I enjoyed all his saves – it’s difficult to pick one out as the best.”
United paid a staggering £17.8m for De Gea three years ago despite the Spaniard’s relative inexperience at just 20.
The former los Rojiblancos shot stopper was bought to replace Dutch legend Van der Sar, and De Gea spoke glowingly about his predecessor.
“Edwin was one of the best. He was calm, good with his feet and he played some great games for Manchester United,” De Gea added.
