Divock Origi better than Mario Balotelli, says Liverpool legend
Mark Lawrenson reckons Liverpool should bring Divock Origi to Anfield earlier than agreed
Divock Origi would provide more of an attacking threat than Mario Balotelli, according to Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson.
The Belgium international hinted that he would be willing to move to Anfield in January after the Reds loaned the striker back to Lille after agreeing a £12m fee in the summer.
However, Italy international Balotelli has struggled since his switch to Liverpool in August, scoring two goals in 13 appearances in all competitions.
And former Liverpool defender Lawrenson feels the Reds should explore whether they can add Origi to their squad earlier than initially agreed with Lille.
“I was intrigued to read the comments from Divock Origi that he would be happy to move to Liverpool in the New Year,” Lawrenson wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“I’m not surprised. His current club Lille aren’t doing very well at the moment.
“And his comments clearly tell us he believes he would have a chance of getting into the Liverpool first team this season.
“If I was Liverpool, I would investigate whether it was possible to take the teenager on in January.
“Certainly, if Lille drop out of the Europa League in the group stage then there is every chance the player will want to move on.
“Maybe it will be a case of Liverpool offering a few more quid to the French side, who I’m sure won’t mind so much.”
Lawrenson added: “He has a lot going for him. He is quick and a handful.
“And he is better than Mario Balotelli is at present.”
