England 3 Slovenia 1: Player ratings as Arsenal stars shine

Player ratings as Danny Welbeck's double helps fire England to victory at Wembley

By Dipak Patel

Joe Hart Was a spectator for most of the match and could do nothing about the unfortunate own goal that looped over his outstretched arm. 5
Nathaniel Clyne It was promising England debut. Attacked with verve, and defended with intelligence. Was always willing to attack the opposition full-back and on another night some of his crosses would have led to goals. 7/10

Gary Cahill Had a decent game and made one outstanding block to deny Kampl from scoring. Made another fine challenge on Lazarevic as he threatened to get in behind the defence. 6

Phil Jagielka Not his best game and made a glaring error that nearly led to Kampl scoring. His lack of pace and age seemed to be showing this season. 5

Kieran Gibbs A fine performance from the Arsenal player. Got himself into good positions when his team were attacking, but as Slovenia pressed towards the end, we also saw his defensive abilities. 7

Jordan Henderson Scored an unfortunate own goal but played his part in a high pressing game early on. He was snappy in the tackle but needs to work on his passing. Often went for the safe option rather than looking forward. 5

Jack Wilshere It was a good performance. Unlike Henderson, his passing was adventurous and created quite a few chances in the first half. One of them was exceptional but was wasted by Rooney as he blazed over. 7

Adam Lallana Has been poor in the league but showed signs today of the player we saw last season. His fantastic turn and deflected cross led to Welbeck’s goal. 7

Raheem Sterling A bit subdued in the first half playing as a number 10. But was excellent when he moved out wide in the second half. Used his pace to great effect and linked well with Welbeck and Rooney. 7

Wayne Rooney Like Sterling he struggled to make an impact in the first half wasting a few chances. Improved in the second half and his excellent run into the heart of the box won his side a penalty. 7

Danny Welbeck Scored two goals and his link up play was fantastic. His one two with Sterling appeared to be telepathic and when he plays like this it makes you wonder why he doesn’t score 20 goals a season. 8

Samir Handanovic Got a strong hand to Rooney’s penalty and was perhaps a bit unlucky not to keep it out. Made some good saves but often punched when there was no need to do so. 6

Miso Brecko Given a torrid time by the fluidity of England’s attack. Didn’t know whether to sit deep or push forward and in the end did neither. 5

Bostjan Cesar Started the game well and made an outstanding challenge to block Rooney as he threatened to score. But in the second half he made some really stupid decisions. His foul on Rooney to concede a penalty was needless. 5

Branko Ilić Much more assured than his defensive partner. Won quite a few headers and made some important challenges, but couldn’t sustain the defence single handedly and will be annoyed with his fellow defenders. 6

Andraz Struna Had an absolute shocker as Clyne and Sterling ran riot down his side of the pitch. Could not contain their pace and was lucky not to receive a booking. 4

Jasmin Kurtic A sterile performance that didn’t really offer much. The manager could see how ineffectual he was and he was substituted in the second half. 5

Ales Mertelj The game seemed to pass him by and he wasn’t able to exert any real influence. Had a fantastic shot towards the end which swerved just wide. 5

Valter Birsa Had a mixed game. Showed his class at times producing some neat touches but was occasionally wasteful. Was substituted after not recovering fully from a knock he sustained in a challenge. 5

Andraz Kirm Picked up some very promising positions and could have caused England problems if Slovenia took more care in possession. Should have done better with a header in the first half but failed to connect properly when in front of goal. 5

Kevin Kampl Had a good dribble into the box but his shot was fantastically blocked by Cahill. Other than that he was mostly a spectator in the game. 5

Milivoje Novakovic A clever striker with good movement. That movement helped him to gain a few yards in the box but he directed his header just wide. 6

Dejan Lazarevic Like Birsa, he failed to really influence the game when he came on and found himself running about aimlessly to stop England from attacking. 5
