Javi Manquillo has described Liverpool defender Glen Johnson as one of the world’s best right-backs.

The England international is fighting to secure a new Reds contract with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Johnson is facing competition for a first-team place from summer signing Manquillo, who moved on a two-year loan deal from Atletico Madrid.

Despite describing the former Chelsea full-back as world-class, Manquillo wasn’t fazed by the prospect of vying for a starting spot with Johnson.

“I came [to Anfield] and I knew what to expect,” Manquillo is quoted as saying by Liverpool Echo.

“Johnson is one of the world’s best, but it was the best move for me. Atletico and I decided it was best, I needed to leave and play.”

Manquillo has made seven Premier League appearances so far this season.
