Harry Kane must start for Tottenham against Stoke this weekend, according to ex-Arsenal man Paul Merson.

England under-21 international Kane is yet to start a Premier League game for the Lilywhites this season, but has claimed seven goals in five starts in the Europa League and League Cup.

It was Kane’s intervention from the bench that completed Spurs’ turnaround against Aston Villa last weekend, and Merson criticised the north Londoners’ performance in that match.

“I went to the game last week at Villa Park and Tottenham were so poor,” said Merson.

“It was only the Christian Benteke sending off that let Tottenham in. I felt sorry for the Spurs fans because they took thousands up there but fair play to them because they stuck with the team even though they were so bad.”

Merson, who made 425 appearances for Arsenal and now works as a pundit for Sky, expects his old side’s bitter rivals to claim victory against Stoke, particularly if Kane starts.

“I think Mauricio Pochettino has to play Harry Kane in this game and I think Tottenham will win,” he said.

“I don’t like going against Stoke but they are not travelling very well.”

After their 2-1 victory over Greek side Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League on Thursday night, a game in which Kane scored what proved to be the winner, Spurs face Stoke at 13.30 BST this Sunday.
