Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on Nemanja Matic following the midfielder’s impressive displays for Chelsea this season.

The Serbia international has been a constant performer in the heart of Chelsea midfield and was named man of the match after Saturday’s 2-1 win at Liverpool.

Matic rejoined Chelsea from Benfica in the January transfer window and has been a regular fixture in Mourinho’s side since his move.

And the Portuguese coach was generous in his praise for the 26-year-old after watching his side maintain their place at the top of the league.

“He is the best player,” said Mourinho of Matic, who has scored three goals and made two assists in 15 games this season.

“He was signed in the most difficult market. Which is for the players who are coming in mid-season, so the last half of the season was for him to improve, not adaptation, as he was a Chelsea player before, but to improve.

“At this moment he is a giant, not for his size but for the way he plays. The man is a giant.”
