Juan Mata has praised Louis van Gaal for his “honesty” following his appointment as Manchester United manager.

Mata, 26, has been limited to seven Premier League starts under the Dutchman this season but the Spaniard is thankful for his new manager’s open approach.

“He is, above all, honest. He tells you the good and bad to your face,” Mata told Cope.

United are already 13 points behind leaders Chelsea after 11 games, and Mata admits that the Red Devils’ primary goal is to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“The aim is to get in the Champions League because the club did not qualify last season,” he added.

“We’d all love to the team to score more goals but, in the end, the forwards will end up scoring more than 15 goals.”

Should Louis van Gaal give Juan Mata more game-time?
