Liverpool are defensively worse than last year, says Alan Shearer
The Newcastle United legend is critical of Liverpool's defending this season
Alan Shearer reckons Liverpool are defensively worse than last season.
The Reds suffered their fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign as Newcastle United were 1-0 winners at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Defensively they are worse this year than last year
Brendan Rodgers’s side have conceded 13 goals in 13 top-flight games despite the Liverpool manager signing three defenders in the summer transfer window.
And Newcastle legend Shearer reckons Liverpool have failed to improve their defensive options, highlighting Alberto Moreno’s error-strewn performance.
“I wasn’t impressed with Liverpool. Their big problem last year was defensive, not scoring goals,” Shearer told BBC Sport.
“I understand Daniel Sturridge is out, but defensively they are worse this year than last year. They didn’t create anything in midfield and they certainly didn’t look like scoring.
“And there were far too many mistakes from Liverpool players. I haven’t got a clue what Alberto Moreno is doing for Newcastle’s goal. I’m not sure he knows where he is.
“He has to get it away. He doesn’t have time to take a touch in the box. He doesn’t know who is around him.”
