Liverpool could be in a relegation battle, claims Jason McAteer

Jason McAteer says Liverpool are lacking leaders after sixth defeat of the season

Liverpool could be facing a relegation battle this season, according to Jason McAteer.

The Reds slumped to their fourth successive defeat on Sunday as Crystal Palace were 3-1 winners against the Merseyside outfit at Selhurst Park.

And former Liverpool midfielder McAteer echoed Jamie Carragher’s post-match sentiments, adding that the Reds need leaders and characters.

“You look around at Liverpool yesterday and all you saw were slumped shoulders,” McAteer wrote in his SportsJoe column.

“Sterling and Coutinho look like they’re sulking. Steven Gerrard looks lost at the minute, like he doesn’t have the answers.

“Before the game I was positive, thinking our next four games were winnable, but it’s just gone from bad to worse.

“At the start of the season top four was the objective, but now we could be in a relegation battle.

“At this stage the club are almost looking at what’s behind them in the table instead of those in front.”

McAteer added: “We’re going to need leaders and characters, because it’s going to be a battle and if we are to come through it Liverpool need to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty.

“If you aren’t willing to do that as a player, then you’re gonna find yourself in a battle. Nothing is given to you in this league.”
