Brendan Rodgers has described Steven Gerrard as the best player that the Liverpool manager has worked with.

The 34-year-old Reds captain has been criticised in recent weeks as Liverpool slipped to four successive defeats.

But Liverpool manager Rodgers is adamant that the former England skipper is still a top-class player.

“Gerrard is still a wonderful player. The best I have worked with,” Rodgers said ahead of the Reds’s crunch clash against Ludogorets in the Champions League.

Rodgers rubbished the suggestion that he is picking the experienced Liverpool midfielder due to his reputation.

“I don’t deal on sentiment,” Rodgers added. “I see Steven every day.

“I judge what he does on the training field and he is like clockwork.

“He is easy to manage because he is a top-class professional and does what is in the best interest of Liverpool.”

Gerrard is Liverpool’s all-time record goal-scorer in Europe after netting 40 goals in 128 appearances in Uefa competitions.
