Liverpool need to sign Gonzalo Higuain or Edinson Cavani, says Reds legend
Phil Thompson says Liverpool have to sign a proven goal-scorer like Diego Costa
Liverpool have to sign a striker of the calibre of Edinson Cavani or Gonzalo Higuain in January, according to Phil Thompson.
Brendan Rodgers has been without injury-ravaged Daniel Sturridge for eight of 11 Premier League games this season, whilst £16m signing Mario Balotelli has struggled to find form.
You have to look for a proven one. You have to convince them to come to this football club
Liverpool were linked with a move for Diego Costa in 2013 before the Spain striker joined Chelsea in the summer, scoring an impressive 10 goals in nine games for the league leaders.
And former Reds centre-half Thompson is urging the Liverpool owners to back their manager in his pursuit of a proven goal-scorer.
“They’ve only put their hand in the pocket for £20m-£25m. So I’d like to think the money is there and they have to trust to Brendan,” Thompson told Sky Sports News.
“But they have to try sign the likes of Higuain, Cavani or Lavezzi. Some of the players who aren’t particularly happy from what we read in the papers. Convince them to come to Liverpool.
“Don’t forget Liverpool were after Costa the year before, and because we didn’t trump up £25m, it didn’t happen. They are the type of players you have to convince to come in January.”
Thompson continued: “You have to pay that money and the salary. Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero have proven a hit. Without those players, those three teams would be nowhere near as good.
“You have to look for a proven one. You have to convince them to come to this football club.”
