‘Liverpool players must be questioning Rodgers’ decision to pick Balotelli’
Graeme Souness writes off Liverpool's chances of getting a result at Real Madrid on Tuesday
Graeme Souness reckons some of the Liverpool players must be questioning why Brendan Rodgers keeps picking Mario Balotelli.
The Reds manager has stuck with the Italy international despite the £16m summer signing failing to score in eight Premier League games.
Other people who are not in the team will be looking at him, as somebody who doesn’t bust a gut, and will ask why he is being continually picked
And Liverpool legend Souness doesn’t believe Rodgers has a player capable of nicking a winner against Real Madrid at Bernabeu on Tuesday.
“I don’t think Brendan Rodgers has enough good players to take them on. In the first match he tried to take them on in a game of football that suited Real Madrid down to the ground,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“He is going to need a cautious gameplan in this game and make sure they defend properly – and then hopefully someone can nick a goal for them.
“Unfortunately, Liverpool don’t have that person right now and they also don’t seem to be able to defend and keep clean sheets.
“Mario Balotelli is not my type of player and I don’t want to talk about him too much. Other people who are not in the team will be looking at him, as somebody who doesn’t bust a gut, and will ask why he is being continually picked?
“On the face of it, this is going to be a very hard game for Liverpool, especially when you factor in how easily Real Madrid won at Anfield. They will be full of confidence going into this game.”
