Mamadou Sakho believes he can provide the leadership that Liverpool’s defence lacks at the moment.

The Reds are languishing in 11th place in the table after a 2-1 defeat by Premier League leaders Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday.

I have set personal objectives. The team has set some too and they are quite similar

Mamadou Sakho

The France international hasn’t featured for Liverpool since a penalty shootout victory over Middlesbrough in the League Cup.

And the former Paris Saint-Germain captain Sakho talked up his leadership qualities as he returns from his 10-week injury lay-off.

Sakho told the Daily Mirror: “For me it (leadership) comes naturally.

“There are different kinds of leaders, technical leaders, dressing-room leaders, psychological leaders.

“I’d rather keep my personal objectives to myself so people don’t think I’m too pretentious.

“But I am a very ambitious person.

“I have set personal objectives. The team has set some too and they are quite similar.”

Sakho has scored one goal in 21 Premier League appearances since his £16m move to Liverpool from PSG.
