Vincent Kompany reflected on a “massive” win for Manchester City after Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

Sergio Aguero netted the winner in the 63rd minute at Etihad Stadium when he turned home Gael Clichy’s low pass after United were reduced to 10 men in the first half when Chris Smalling was shown a second yellow card.

The win hoisted City up to third in the table, six points behind leaders Chelsea and left United ninth and 13 points adrift of the pace-setters.

“The derby win is massive,” said Kompany.

“For a minute, the league doesn’t matter. It gives us our city back. It is a boost for us and we will do our job again in the Champions League on Wednesday.

“You can only think about the next game and improve performances, we will gradually get there again.

“We are working every day to make sure we are a better team than last year.”
