The Citizens fell behind within a minute to a fine Seydou Doumbia header and the CSKA striker struck again after Yaya Toure had netted a brilliant free-kick equaliser at Etihad Stadium.
Fernandinho and Toure received their marching orders in the second half as the Citizens extended their four-game winless run in the Champions League this season.
But City captain Kompany issued a rallying cry on Twitter following the defeat on Wednesday night as Manuel Pellegrini’s side are left needing to beat Bayern Munich and Roma.

Meanwhile, City manager Manuel Pellegrini struggled to explain his side’s poor form following the Group E defeat.
“It’s very difficult to understand why we played so badly,” Pellegrini told Sky Sports.
“From the beginning we were so nervous. We lost so many passes and we gave them the two goals. Really, we didn’t play.
“It’s difficult to know why you have so low a performance. In the way we tried to play we have not changed anything we did in any other games. I realise it’s a very difficult and strange moment to understand why it happened.”
