Joe Hart Made two excellent saves. One from Van Persie at his near post, but the second one from Di Maria was sensational as his dived low to palm the ball to safety. 7/10

Pablo Zabaleta His influence grew as United went down to ten men. Gave Navas plenty of support down the wing and caused United’s defence so many problems going forward. 6

Martin Demichelis Was booked for a rash challenge on Di Maria but his experience helps Kompany. Pressed well and put United under pressure as they looked to mount attacks. 6

Vincent Kompany Hasn’t been at his best this season but this performance was a lot more assured. Aggressive in the tackle and helped to keep his defence organised as United attacked late on. 6

Gael Clichy Was helped by Januzaj being substituted early on as it gave him a free license to attack. His cut back led to Aguero’s winner. 7

Fernando Kept the ball reasonably well but still concedes too many fouls. Is slowly adjusting to the Premier League and his defensive discipline certainly gives Toure more freedom to push forward. 6

Yaya Toure Struggled initially as United outnumbered City in midfield. But he was ruthless once United went down to ten men and orchestrated many of the attacks. Was unlucky not to score towards the end with a great curling effort. 8

Jesus Navas Showed great pace on the counter and hit the post when he shot from an acute angle. A bit wasteful when in promising positions out wide. 6

James Milner Another industrious performance as he worked tirelessly down the wing giving Valencia quite a few problems. Been one of City’s most consistent performers this season. 6

Stevan Jovetic Played ok but a lack of games in recent times showed. Did well to man-mark Blind early in the game to stop him influencing it. 5

Sergio Aguero Caused United’s defence so many problems with his pace. Rojo and Smalling just couldn’t deal with him early on, and Fellaini could have conceded two penalties due to Aguero’s direct running. Scored the winning goal. 7

Edin Dzeko Gave City some presence when he came on but should have done better when he was released through on goal late on. 5

Samir Nasri Probably not the player you want to have in the team when defending which City did late on. 5

David De Gea Another very good performance from the Spaniard. Made two excellent saves from Navas and Aguero. 7

Antonio Valencia Caught out of position quite a few times but that was often down to playing in an unfamiliar position. Did well considering the circumstances. 6

Chris Smalling Completely mindless from the 24-year-old. First booking came from blocking Hart’s clearance. The second booking reflected a player that hasn’t matured yet as he flew in recklessly at Milner to get himself sent off. 3

Marcos Rojo Had an action-packed game. Was lucky not to give away a penalty on Toure and made plenty of fully-committed challenges that could have led to a yellow card. In the end one of his tackles led to him injuring his shoulder and he had to be taken off. 4

Luke Shaw Had a very good game and kept Navas quiet for most of it. Made a couple of excellent last-ditch challenges and coped well considering his team were down to ten men. 7

Daley Blind His pace was exposed when Toure attacked him directly but otherwise it was another good performance from United’s most consistent player this season. 7

Marouane Fellaini Made his presence felt in midfield with quite a few tackles but was often clumsy and could have given away a penalty. Still not the best technically and could have done better in promising positions. 6

Adnan Januzaj Was unfortunate to be sacrificed after Smalling’s red card. Played decent up until then causing Clichy quite a few problems on the left hand side with his direct play. 6

Wayne Rooney Gave the ball away quite a lot early on trying to play too many ambitious balls. But his performance was full of fight and desire. A brilliant run late on where he took it past three defenders could have led to a goal. 7

Angel Di Maria Had a quiet game by his standards but still managed to put in quite a few dangerous free-kicks that United should have done better with. Unlucky not to score after Hart brilliantly saved his powerful strike. 7

Robin van Persie Did reasonably well and grew in stature as City went deeper and deeper. Did well to fashion a chance out of nothing which the keeper saved, but was still too light-weight at times and didn’t hold the ball up often enough. 6

Michael Carrick Outstanding considering it was his first game back from injury. Was composed at the back and helped McNair through some difficult moments. 7

Paddy Mcnair Another mature performance from the youngster considering he was thrown in at the deep end. Showed more composure than Smalling and Rojo and is likely to start the next game. 7
