Wayne Rooney insisted that there were plenty of positives for Manchester United despite Sunday’s 1-0 defeat by Manchester City at The Etihad.

Sergio Aguero’s second-half goal was all that separated the two sides after United were reduced to 10 men when Chris Smalling was sent off before half-time.

The loss left United ninth in the Premier League table and 13 points behind leaders Chelsea after 10 games.

However, Rooney feels the the Red Devils are improving under new manager Louis van Gaal.

“We have to focus on ourselves,” said Rooney.

“You can see every week we are getting better. We are not far away from being back up there and being a very good side.

“We came here for a result and leave with no points so we are disappointed.”
