Paul Merson says Manchester United are stuttering and nicking results after an edgy 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

The Reds Devils endured a frustrating first half before substitute Juan Mata scored a winner with 23 minutes remaining at Old Trafford.

And former Arsenal playmaker Merson wasn’t impressed with the home side’s performance, criticising their lack of attacking threat.

“United are stuttering and nicking results. It ain’t great,” Merson told Sky Sports.

He added: “Man United never really looked like scoring. Fellaini had a header off the line and Van Gaal took Januzaj off and put Mata on.

“Mata’s goal gets the slightest deflection but the goalkeeper should have saved it.

“Mata hit the post. Get used to it United fans, it ain’t going to be pretty. They were hanging on for 1-0. The fans were pushing them on to get another one but you could hear the groans.”

Merson added that Robin van Persie isn’t clicking with his United team-mates this term.

“He was [quiet]. He had one chance. It is hard,” Merson added.

“Palace sat back and Van Persie plays on the shoulder and needs the ball inside.

“At the moment he isn’t making the darting run and he isn’t getting the ball. It needs to change.”
