Man United have no chance of top-four finish, says former boss
Tommy Docherty feels that Manchester United are not capable of securing a top-four finish this season
Manchester United are unlikely to finish in the top four this season, according to former manager Tommy Docherty.
The Red Devils moved up to seventh in the table thanks to Saturday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford but still remain 13 points behind leaders Chelsea after 11 games.
Their best chance of getting into the Champions League is to swim the Channel
United have struggled to find consistent form in the top flight following Louis van Gaal’s appointment as David Moyes’ successor.
And ex-United boss Docherty doesn’t feel that Van Gaal’s side have shown themselves as capable of breaking back into the Champions League spots.
“Van Gaal must have arrived dreaming of winning the title, but that went out the window in the opening few weeks,” Docherty told Goal.
“I wouldn’t put any money on them finishing in the top four, to be honest. Unless they buck up their ideas, their best chance of getting into the Champions League is to swim the Channel.
“There is no doubt that Van Gaal’s record on the Continent is fantastic, but perhaps he hasn’t appreciated that the English Premier League is a different ball game.”
