Manchester United target Kevin Strootman has thanked Roma fans for all their support after making his comeback from injury on Sunday night.

The Netherlands international got six minutes under his belt as Rudi Garcia’s side were emphatic 3-0 winners against Torino.

The 24-year-old midfielder missed this summer’s World Cup after suffering a long-term knee injury against Napoli last season.

Strootman, who has been heavily linked with a move to United following Louis van Gaal’s appointment, paid tribute to his team-mates, medical staff and fans after his return.

“First of all, thank you,” Strootman told Roma TV.

“It was difficult after the injury. I’ve worked for eight months now [to get back]. I spoke to the Coach before the game, and after it went to 3-0 he put me on.

“Our team is stronger than last year, I can see that in training. We have to win it all, that’s important for us.

“I worked for eight months to get back onto the field and salute our fans. I received messages of support every day, on social media, but at [Roma’s training ground] Trigoria too.

“It was an emotional evening.”
