Mauricio Pochettino has moved to end the speculation surrounding Jan Vertonghen’s future by insisting that he is “happy” with the centre-half’s contribution to Tottenham.

The Belgium international has been touted as a potential January target for Manchester United as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his defensive options

However, Spurs boss Pochettino has described the defender as an “important player” for the north London club.

“I am happy with Jan, for us he’s an important player,” said Pochettino. “We’re in three competitions, we change the team a lot.”

Pochettino, whose side are 12th in the Premier League after 11 games, added: “My job as a head coach is to find a solution, get more positive results.

“We need to be more strong in all areas. I’m confident with the players and the club.”
