Man United’s Wayne Rooney not a ‘great’ player, claims Alan Shearer
The former England striker does not believe that Wayne Rooney is a truly 'great' player
Alan Shearer as claimed that Wayne Rooney is not a “great” player after the Manchester United captain earned his 100th England cap on Saturday.
The 29-year-old striker reached the milestone as he led Roy Hodgson’s England side out at Wembley to face Slovenia in Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier.
However, former England striker Shearer feels that Rooney cannot be placed in the same bracket as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who he considers to be true greats of the game.
Shearer told BBC Sport: “I think the word ‘great’ is used maybe too many times nowadays but you can’t argue with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are ‘great’.
“I wouldn’t put Wayne in that bracket. Very good, yes. But if you are using those two as great players I don’t think he’s at that level.”
Rooney has scored three goals and made two assists in eight Premier League games for Manchester United so far this season.
