Manuel Pellegrini has appeared to hint that Manchester City could sign Steven Gerrard if Liverpool fail to offer their captain a new deal.

The Reds are yet to open talks with their long-serving captain over a new contract ahead of the expiration of his current deal next May.

Earlier this week, Gerrard revealed he would seek a new club if an offer failed to materialise, ruling out retirement at the end of the season.

And City manager Pellegrini, who signed Chelsea legend Frank Lampard on loan from New York City in August, feels Gerrard still has plenty to offer.

Pellegrini said: “I don’t ever rate players on their age. It depends on the money they cost and the number of years they have (on their contract).

“But, like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard is a top player and he can continue at a high level for a couple more years.”

Gerrard scored 13 goals and made 13 assists in 34 Premier League appearances.
