Maribor 1 Chelsea 1: Player ratings as Nemanja Matic impress

Maribor 1 Chelsea 1: Player ratings as Jose Mourinho's men extend their unbeaten run to 16 games

By Dipak Patel

Petr Cech Didn’t make many saves but Maribor were often wasteful in front of goal. Could do nothing about the first goal though. 5/10

Branislav Ivanovic Not his best game but was still reliable in his defensive duties winning three aerial duels. 6

Kurt Zouma Made a good clearance early on as he stopped a goal bound effort. However, his wayward header led to the opening goal from Maribor. 5

John Terry Had to adjust as Chelsea went to a back three in the second half. His knock down from the corner led to Matic’s eqauliser. 6

Filipe Luis Did very little to make an impression. For some reason he hasn’t replicated the form he showed last season for Atletico. Likely to be back on the bench this weekend. 5

Nemanja Matic Such an imposing figure that covers the ground well. Constantly started attacks from deep taking the ball from the centre-halves. Used a striker’s instinct to score the equaliser tapping in from close range. 7

Cesc Fabregas A rare poor game. Maribor pressed Chelsea high up the pitch and he was caught in possession so many times. Was stifled and had little impact. 5

Andre Schurrle Another poor performance in what has been a season to forget thus far for the German. Missed an open goal even if the off-side flag saved his blushes. Was taken off at half-time for Diego Costa. 4

Willian Played reasonably well and made a few successful dribbles. Also hit some nice diagonals but Mourinho was looking for more pace in the attack and the Brazilian was sacrificed at half time to add more potency to the attack. 6

Eden Hazard Chelsea’s best player on the night. His understanding with the other attacking players is almost telepathic and a few quick one-twos put him into a few promising positions. Did well to win the penalty but his poor penalty kick was saved. 7

Didier Drogba Not as influential as he has been in the past. Age probably played his part but he also had to play in an unfamiliar role when Costa came on. 5

Diego Costa Chelsea look much more potent when he is on the pitch. Put himself about and fashioned a few chances. Was denied a goal by an outstanding save from Handanovic when he hit the ball on the half volley. 6

Oscar Has been one of Chelsea’s form players of late and he created a few chances for his team. His understanding with Hazard is improving all the time. 6

Ramires Looked a little off the pace but that was mainly due to a lack of games. Played in an unfamiliar position almost as a wingback. 5

Jasmin Handanovic Had the game of his life and he repelled numerous attacks with outstanding saves. He made eight in total but his save from Costa was exceptional. Also made another important one late on keeping out Hazard’s penalty. 9

Mitja Viler Played quite well and helped Maribor to earn a valuable point. A little wasteful in possession and gave away a few sloppy fould. 6

Aleksander Rajcevic Brilliant game for the centre-back as he marshalled the defence well. Even as the pressure grew late on he held firm. 7

Arghus Forged a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence. Made countless interceptions and won numerous headers. 7

Petar Stojanovic Attacked well when he could but also played a large part in keeping out Chelsea. Kept discipline throughout most of the game. 6

Zelkjo Filipovic Booked for his impulsive hack at Nemanja Matic. Probably the weak link in the midfield as he struggled to contain some of the technical players of Chelsea. 5

Sintayehu Sallallich A tricky player that has a deceptive turn of pace. It caught out Luis early on as he turned him fantastically. 7

Agim Ibraimi A very clever player that managed to find quite a few spaces in behind the midfield in the first half. His fine display was capped by a brilliant goal which he curled into the far corner from just inside the box. 8

Ales Mertelj An energetic performance as his high pressing often led to Maribor winning the ball high up the pitch. 7

Tavares Showed some flashes of brilliance early on as he ghosted past Terry and Matic and nearly set up an early goal. Faded as the game went on. 6

Luka Zahovic Been one of Maribor’s best players this season scoring numerous goals. His goal-scoring touch seem to leave him as he missed a chance from point blank range. 6
