Mario Balotelli has tons of ability, says Liverpool captain
Steven Gerrard says Mario Balotelli is realising the pressure of being a Liverpool striker
Mario Balotelli has tons of ability, according to Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
The Reds forward has been criticised by former professionals and the club’s fans in recent weeks after a disappointing start to his Anfield career.
The Italy international has scored an underwhelming two goals in 11 appearances in all competitions following his £16m switch from AC Milan.
But Reds skipper Gerrard is adamant that Balotelli is working hard in training as the 24-year-old looks to improve.
“Being Liverpool’s centre-forward brings a lot of pressure and big weight on your shoulders,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.
“I think he has found that out but he is working really hard in training to put it right and hopefully the goal against Swansea in the Capital One Cup will help him kick on because he’s certainly got tons of ability.”
The retired England international described former Liverpool team-mate as one of the best players in the world.
“When I saw the events in the summer [when Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup] I thought we would find it very difficult to keep hold of him and it was probably inevitable [that he would go], but before that I was hoping we would get another season out of him.
“I always knew that either Barcelona or Real Madrid would come in for him because his is a wonderful footballer and on form last year he was probably up there with Cristiano Ronaldo.”
