Morgan, Owen and more: Twitter reacts as Arsenal man nets England double
Piers Morgan and Michael Owen both tweet their thoughts as Danny Welbeck helps fire England to a 2-1 win over Slovenia
Danny Welbeck scored twice as England came from behind to beat Slovenia in Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley.
After a goalless first half, the visitors took the lead in the 57th minute when Jordan Henderson headed in an own goal.
England drew level two minutes later, however, when Wayne Rooney scored a penalty as the striker marked his 100th cap with a crucial goal.
Arsenal striker Welbeck made it 2-1 with scuffed shot before slotting in the third in the 72nd minute to wrap up the win.
Welbeck, who joined the Gunners from Manchester United over the summer, has scored five goals in England’s last four games.
The striker’s goals inevitably prompted plenty of reaction on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.
Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) insists he that he has always backed Welbeck: “The only real surprise is that people continue to doubt Welbeck’s quality. He’s class and when he plays as a striker, is more than capable of clocking up the goals.”
Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) gets a tad sarcastic: “Welbeck has now scored 10 times as many goals this season as Falcao has for United. #NotTheRequiredStandard”
Jody Morris (@morriskid) reckons Welbeck has silenced his critics: “10 in 12 starts as a striker for England..not hearing as much on ere from you Welbeck bashers.. People that hammer Welbeck I can’t talk football with..the lad is far from the finished article but he offers so much 4 the team!!”
Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) says the forward was the man of the match: “Andy Townsend gives Wilshere MOM can’t agree. For me it’s Welbeck. 2 goals and non stop all game.”
And finally, Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) praises his former Manchester United team-mate: “Can’t see Roy putting Welbeck out on the wing again anytime soon!! #Flourishing”
