Mourinho delivers latest Chelsea injury update ahead of Maribor clash
Jose Mourinho wants Diego Costa to make a return to full fitness
Jose Mourinho was happy to see Diego Costa and Ramires make their return to first-team action as Chelsea were 2-1 winners against Queens Park Rangers.
The 26-year-old striker was named in Mourinho’s starting line-up for Saturday’s west London derby after missing their previous four games due to a hamstring injury.
We have to manage his preparation and playing time and try to make him solid again
While Costa failed to add to his seven Premier League goals, the Spain international did manage to get 78 minutes under his belt before the striker was replaced by Andre Schurrle.
And Chelsea manager Mourinho was happy to see his £32m summer signing on the pitch after a series of frustrating hamstring problems, adding that the Blues needed to carefully manage Costa’s fitness.
“Diego played something like 75-77 minutes. Obviously that is far from the best level which is acceptable,” Mourinho told Sky Sports News.
“But now we have to manage his preparation and playing time and try to make him solid again.”
Chelsea had taken a first-half lead thanks to Oscar’s brilliant strike before QPR forward Charlie Austin scored his third goal in two Premier League games.
Brazil international Ramires was a late substitute for Eden Hazard after the Belgium international scored Chelsea’s winner from the spot in the 75th minute.
And Mourinho underlined the importance of Ramires’s return after losing experienced midfielder John Obi Mikel to injury earlier this week.
“It is important for us. Ramires for a minute is not enough but to have him available is important,” Mourinho added.
